The Comfort and Challenge of Story (7/12-18), a 5-day/6-night intensive, examines the comfort and grace of the creative imagination as well as the mystery and challenge of forming the imagined into story. Daily classes, practices and assignments encourage the imagination, develop emotional and dramatic sense, and investigate the details that keep both writer and reader on solid ground. For writers of all levels. May be taken as half-program or as preparation for Writers’ Retreat.
Writers’ Retreat (7/20-26) is a 5-day/6-night focused, unscheduled time for writing – an opportunity to begin, continue, rewrite, or experiment with writing in any literary genre. Donna will read your manuscript in advance and consult privately with you. Optional nightly gathering and reading. 14-day option available
About Donna Hanelin Donna attended the College of Creative Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the San Francisco Art Institute. She has developed and taught courses in creative writing, including poetry, fiction, autobiography and personal essay. She directs students toward a clear, detailed and compassionate evaluation of works-in-progress, with an emphasis on both self-knowledge and artistic form.
Donna also teaches weekly classes and one-day workshops in Nevada City and Sacramento, California. These include Basics, for beginners and returning writers; Open Door Writing Practice, with a focus on spontaneous writing; and Light of Day, for writers working on a novel, autobiography, memoir or story collection; Short Story Clinic.
