In the spring of 2002, I attended a residential writing retreat in Bethany, Ontario, led by Beth Follett of Pedlar Press—a wonderful and illuminating experience—except that it rained every day and the liquor store was far away. I said without thinking, that it was a pity we couldn’t hold the event in Santiago, Chile, where my husband and I lived in a farmhouse with a large garden, pool, vineyard in front and fields at the back; where wine was cheaper than milk and it never rained in January and February (months of the bitter northern winter). Our home is in a small village on the outskirts of Santiago, where the majestic Andes lie to the east and Valparaiso and the Pacific coast beckon from the west.
Beth challenged me to realize that throwaway comment, my husband and I did, and in 2005 she flew from Toronto to Chile and led a two-week workshop with eight writers. It was brilliant.
In January 2014, Beth Follett—for the third time—and Stan Dragland—for the second—will return to lead a workshop entitled Spirit Level II, Los Parronales's fifteenth writing retreat since start up in 2005.
