Architects study the buildings of other architects. Photographers study the techniques of other photographers. Artists of all types examine the work of both contemporaries and masters in their field.

The ability to read carefully is the writer's secret weapon.

Fine writing, like good music, sounds extraordinary, even to the average reader with an untrained ear. If your sentences and paragraphs don't have the impact you'd like them to, how to arrive at such well-polished prose may be a source of puzzlement and mystery. This class helps to dispel the mystery.

All good writing has at its roots exceptional words, sentences, paragraphs and scenes, used in precise ways to create memorable writing. Look closely, and discern skillful patterns.

Exquisite writing looks effortless but is often the result of careful arrangement and much polishing with a soft cloth.

The Read to Write course teaches writers to read for technique and inspiration. Each lesson discusses literary excerpts to illustrate complex elements of fiction. Improve your craft while also honing your ability to analyze literary works. Understanding what makes writing exceptional is the first step to writing well.

The course consists of four lessons spread over eight weeks, with assigned readings, questions, exercises and feedback. There are no right or wrong answers, only the enjoyment of probing deeper and of examining work from different perspectives to understand practical techniques.

In the final week, a piece of writing may be submitted for detailed feedback.
