The Iowa Summer Writing Festival offers 130 weekend and one-week workshops during June and July. A few are designated as beginning courses, a few as advanced courses, but most are designed for those who are somewhere in between.
Weekend sessions begin Saturday morning and end by 4PM Sunday; one-week sessions begin Sunday evening and meet weekday afternoons for at least three hours. Individual conferences are scheduled with the workshop leader, as well as other activities. Week-long workshops are designed to give you plenty of time to write, revise, read and critique.
The Workshop Method In most cases the main text for the workshop is your own creative work. Some workshops are devoted to critiquing work you've brought from home, some to generating new work through exercises and assignments, and some a combination of the two. Every person is an essential part of the group and has an essential responsibility to it. Your writing is read and discussed by everyone in your workshop, giving you the chance to receive responses from a group of careful readers. You are responsible for giving the same important feedback to others on their work.
