The Split Rock Arts Program is the University of Minnesota's summer series of workshops in creative writing, visual art, and design. Held on the Twin Cities’ campus and at the University’s Cloquet Forestry Center in northern Minnesota, the 25-year-old program is a popular destination because of its promise of intensive study with outstanding artists and writers from around the world.
Away from the demands of daily life, participants revel in having the time and space to explore art without interruption in one of two unique environments, both of which foster hands-on learning and supportive artists’ communities. Twin Cities workshops are host to special events, including Split Rock Soirées, and Forestry Center workshops offer a retreat-style atmosphere in which the serenity of the natural world is central to the week’s creative work. All workshops allow for significant one-to-one contact between participant and instructor.
Instructors for 2008 include: Eula Biss, Michael Dennis Browne, Patricia Weaver Francisco, Philip Gerard, Jan Spivey Gilchrist, Rigoberto González, James Harms, John Holman, Tayari Jones, Lance Larsen, Valerie Miner, Kyoko Mori, Scott Russell Sanders, Ruth Schwartz, Catherine Watson, and more.
Workshops begin each Sunday starting June 15 and conclude August 1, 2008. No prerequisites. Graduate/undergraduate credit and scholarships available. Registration opens in February 25, 2008. Scholarship deadline is May 5, 2008.
