The International Artists' and Writers' Workshops in Ghana
The International Artists’ & Writers’ Workshops
Ghana • July 26-August 7, 2009
The IAWW provides authentic travel/education experiences with attentive, personalized service in a comfortable, safe atmosphere. Our goal is to make a vacation to the developing world a satisfying, multi-faceted experience of creativity and self-discovery.
With our carefully designed itinerary blending contact with Ghanaian culture, structured workshops taught by award-winning artists and time to write, the program fosters a unique space for people to unwind and become receptive to creative breakthroughs and new experiences.
By keeping class sizes small, we maintain an intimate, intensive and supportive atmosphere. For our inaugural Ghana trip, award-winning writer and filmmaker Shane Book will lead the program.
Accra highlights include visits to the Nkrumah Memorial and African American scholar and writer W.E.B. Du Bois’s last home and resting place. In the evenings participants have the option of exploring Accra’s nightlife or working on their writing.
From Accra we travel to a beautiful coastal village. Here the emphasis is on creating new work. In addition to leading the workshop, the faculty is available for individual manuscript consultations.
When not writing, participants can relax on the beach or meet local residents for a taste of Ghanaian village life. Performances of traditional Ghanaian music and dance and visits to historical sites—including castles which were the final holding points for slaves before their transatlantic passage—are some of the highlights during our coastal stay.
Join us in Ghana from July 26th to August 7, 2009 for the International Writers' Workshop, the first program of its kind in West Africa.
Workshops, individual manuscript consultations, cultural excursions, tours of historic sites, exchanges with local artists, beach retreat at a coastal village, evening social events.
